Diamond Head

Short, steep classic to the summit lookout; stairs/tunnel near the top.

Reservations/fees: Non-residents must reserve entry (and parking if driving) via the state system; residents free w/ HI ID. Entry $5 pp, parking $10/vehicle (credit card only).

Koko Head Crater (Koko Crater Stairs)

1,048 old railway “steps”; intense cardio with huge views at the top.

Status: Reopened July 10, 2025 after a brief safety closure; stay on the tramway and obey posted signs

Waimea Falls

Paved garden walk to a waterfall; family-friendly. Swimming often allowed when conditions permit (life jackets required when open). Admission required; check hours/conditions before you go.

Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse (Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline)

Wide paved path, sweeping coast views; prime whale watching in winter. No reservation/entry fee.

Mānoa Falls

Short rainforest stroll to a tall falls (can be muddy; heed leptospirosis/flash-flood warnings). Paid parking at Paradise Park or limited street parking; check Na Ala Hele for current notices.

ʻAiea Loop (Keaīwa Heiau State Rec Area)

Shady ridge loop with H-3 valley views; great 2–3 hr nature fix.

Lanikai Pillbox (Kaʻiwa Ridge)

Iconic sunrise over the Mokes. Parking is very restricted in Lanikai (holiday/weekend bans & special enforcement; consider parking at Kailua Beach and walking). Occasional morning closures for Little Fire Ant treatment.

Puʻu Maʻeliʻeli (Kāneʻohe)

Quick pillbox with sweeping bay looks; muddy after rain.

Kuliʻouʻou Ridge

Stair-stepped ridge to Koʻolau views; popular, start early for parking.

Kaʻau Crater

Waterfalls + rope sections around a lush crater; very demanding and slippery when wet.

Kaʻena Point (from Mokulēʻia or Keawaʻula)

Coastal wildlife refuge walk to an albatross/shearwater sanctuary; hot/exposed, no shade.
